Curiouser and curiouser

Almost opposite Covent Garden underground station, this two bedroom home couldn’t be more central. The great burbling Thames is a short saunter away, so wander its banks and marvel at the grandeur of Somerset House, or gaze at the glinting Shard across the water. Or admire the pomp and pageantry of the famous Shaftsbury Avenue as it skirts around Soho to Trafalgar Square. After strolling around your surrounds, curl up with a book on the sitting room’s delicate, handpicked cushions, and slip off to Wonderland, contemplating James Street’s conceptual and endearing interior design choices.

Happily ever after

Your hosts are a successful lawyer and a writer who’ve poured their unique blend of creativity and exactitude into their Covent Garden pied-à-terre, from the geometric wallpaper to the fanciful embroidered soft furnishings. They love the fact that their neighbourhood is home to London’s finest restaurants, theatres and museums.

Down the rabbit hole

Take the plunge across the hearth at James Street and you’ll be beguiled, for the whimsical touches scintillate with playful nods and lux materials. In the open plan kitchen and sitting room, rest your wearied legs on the deep, purple L-shaped sofa, and admire the celestial, spherical lampshade, resplendent in paper flowers, that looms large on the ceiling. An original fireplace mouths a silent story of the home’s Edwardian past, while the space age plastic dining furniture is utterly contemporary.

Mad as it sounds, two top-hat lampshades hang above the black marble worktops in the kitchen, and some brightly coloured birdies decorate a set of crockery trays – the perfect tea party accompaniment. Turn things down a notch in the sophisticatedly muted bathroom where you might take a power shower, surrounded by immaculate, beige wall tiles. From here, sail through to the double bedroom where flushes of fuchsia bring the outside in, and tip-toe across the sleek wooden flooring to recline on the crisp, white princess bed.

In the master bedroom, an original sash window and stucco are offset by the azure walls and gold statement mirror. Rest your head on the double bed’s pillows and conjure images of seascapes and loquacious walruses.

A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk

Take to the pavements like the owl and the pussycat, arm in arm with your amour along Covent Garden’s historic streets, simply absorbing the postcard-perfect architecture. Here, London’s finest boutiques and eateries line the streets, and the commercial bustle of Oxford Circus is a ten minute stroll away. Such cultural institutions as the Royal Opera House and Somerset House are also tantalisingly nearby.
